Real Estate Salesperson

The following outlines general licensing information for Real Estate Salesperson. For specific information on filing an application, you will need to obtain the application, which includes a detailed listing of the requirements.

A. Licensing Fees: 
$150.00 
$35.00 Recovery Account (one time fee) 

B. Education Requirements: 
Tenth Grade education or higher; 60 Hours of additional pre-licensing instruction from a school and instructor approved by the Board. 

C. Experience Requirements: None 
 
D. Examination Information: 
Pass the Montana Real Estate Examination with a score of 80% or better the uniform and 70% or better on the state portion. 
 
E. Reciprocity: 
Reciprocity agreements are in effect with the following states or licensing jurisdictions: Alberta, Canada 
Waiver of examination and/or education: An application may be submitted to determine if an applicant has a license in another state or jurisdiction with licensing standards substantially equivalent to Montana's requirements. The Board may approve to waive all or part of the required pre-licensing education and/or examination.

F. Renewal Period: October 31. G. Renewal Fee: $150.00 

H. Continuing Education Requirements: 12 hours of continuing education annually, 4 hours of which must be from a mandatory topic and the current license year's core course that best aligns with daily practice of real estate. All new salespeople will receive an interim license that will expire October 31. As required by ARM, 24.210.611, you must complete the New License Mandatory Continuing Education class (commonly referred to as the Rookie Course), take the current license year's Broker/Salesperson Core Course and renew your license prior to October 31, or your license will expire and you will be required to reapply for a license and meet current licensing requirements. 

I. Other Special License Requirements: Must be 18 years of age or older.


Real Estate Broker

The following outlines general licensing information for Real Estate Brokers. For specific information on filing an application, you will need to obtain the application, which includes a detailed listing of the requirements. 

A. Licensing Fees: 
$175.00 
$ 35.00 Recovery Account (one time fee if not currently licensed in Montana) 

B. Education Requirements: 
High school graduation or equivalent; 60 Hours of additional pre-licensing instruction from a school and instructor approved by the Board. 
 
C. Experience Requirements: 
Must have two years as a licensed Salesperson. 
Must have completed the following required activity criteria within 3 years of the date of application: 
1. Minimum of 30 residential real estate transactions, or 
2. Minimum of 10 commercial, agricultural or farm and ranch real estate transactions. 
3. One point for each year of real estate brokerage supervisory experience-maximum of 3 points 
4. One point for each licensed real estate full time equivalent (FTE) supervised within the last 36 months, maximum of 10 
points 
5. One point for every five transactions supervised in the last 35 months, maximum of 15 points 
6. One point for each instructor day (maximum of six hours) within the last 36 months.

D. Exam Information: 
Pass the Montana Real Estate Examination with a score of 80% or better on both the uniform and state portion. 
The Montana Real Estate Broker Examination will be offered as a simulation examination only, beginning September 18, 2006. 
Reciprocity: Reciprocity agreements are in effect with the following licensing jurisdiction: Alberta, Canada 
Equivalency: An application may be submitted to determine if an applicant has equivalent education and/or experience. An applicant must be currently licensed in Montana and file an application for equivalency determination. If equivalency is approved by the Board, the applicant must complete 60 hours of pre-licensing instruction from a school and instructor approved by the Board and pass the required examinations. 

Waiver of examination and/or education: An application may be submitted to determine if an applicant has a license in another state or jurisdiction with licensing standards substantially equivalent to Montana's requirements. The Board may 
approve to waive all or part of the required pre-licensing education and/or examination. 

E. Renewal Period: October 31 

F. Renewal Fee: $175.00 
 
G. Continuing Education Requirements: 12 hours of continuing education annually, 4 hours of which must be from a mandatory topic and the current license year’s core course that best aligns with the daily practice of real estate.
